Miniature beagles, all the great attributes of the regular beagle, only cuter!
Miniature beagles, sometimes known as pocket beagles, were originally bred in the 1300's and were said to be no longer than nine inches. Unfortunately, these purebred miniature beagles are no longer in existence. The term miniature beagle today has a different meaning, and typically a miniature beagle by today's standards is approximately thirteen to fifteen inches. This usually means that a miniature beagle is usually nothing more than a small beagle. Because no pure pocket beagle blood is in existence, breeders will sometimes breed beagles for small size, and ignore other undesirable health problems that will occur in miniature beagles. This isn't to say that you shouldn't want a miniature beagle of your own, but you should think about what you are buying if you are going to pay big money to a breeder, for a dog that is really just a small beagle, with all of the normal health problems of a dog you would pick up from the pound.
If you understand dog breeding then you know the difference between the breed of a dog, and the attributes of a dog. A miniature beagle is not a breed, it is a beagle with small attributes. That being said, some live by the words "the smaller the better" when it comes to dogs. Check out the links below for more information on miniature beagles.
